Previous supervisions

Research Staff: Mentored 10 part-time Research Support Officers at the University of Malta across multiple funded projects.
Doctoral Supervision: Supervised 2 doctoral candidates through to successful PhD completion (Gamification, Environmental Valuation).
Dissertation Supervision: Supervised over 70 undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations to completion. Concurrently served as an internal/external examiner for over 140 dissertations at the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree levels.
Internships: Hosted and mentored multiple Erasmus+ students and visiting academic interns at the Department of Economics, University of Malta.
Research Methods Guidance: Mentored hundreds of students in drafting dissertation proposals within the Research Methods unit.
Committee Review: Reviewed dozens of PhD research proposals as an active member of the FEMA Doctoral Committee.

I belong to a family of teachers, so for me, becoming a teacher was less a career choice than a family tradition. If I count the years spent as a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta, I have been teaching for 30 years. If I include the years spent playing teacher at home, I could probably stretch that to 50.

University of Malta. At the University of Malta, I created and delivered 15 study units at Bachelor’s, Honours and Master’s levels, including associated virtual learning environments, multimodal assessments and blended-learning content (e.g. Environmental Economics, Behavioural Economics and Research Methods). I have contributed to more than 15 multidisciplinary units at Diploma, Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, as well as to DegreePlus extracurricular courses. I also regularly deliver University training activities, including sessions on research ethics, academic outreach and sustainability.

Supervision. I typically supervise and examine around 4–8 Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations each year. Since 2021, I have also mentored approximately 20 MSc students annually as they develop research proposals, helping them move from ideas to viable and academically rigorous research projects. I have supervised six PhD students—four currently ongoing and two completed—working on topics including the Blue Economy, Citizen Science, Wellbeing Economics and Gamification. I have also supervised two Postdoctoral Fellows and 12 Research Support Officers. This is the aspect of teaching I like most.

International and eclectic. I have delivered lectures at universities internationally, including in Kathmandu, Tokyo, Dublin, New South Wales, Stirling, Ankara and Spain. I have also delivered webinars for organisations such as the European Parliament and the Canada Wellbeing Knowledge Network, as well as lecture series organised with a range of international institutions. I have had an eclectic range of students: CEOs, policymakers, children, artists, activists, clergy, gamers, young scientists, youth camps, risk managers, marriage-preparation groups, enterprise incubators, European Commission executives, Commonwealth leaders and elderly students at the University of the Third Age
