Along the way, my work has been recognised in more ways than I could have planned, and in more fields than fit comfortably under a single academic heading.
Trophy cabinet. Since embarking on an academic career, I have received awards for innovation and creativity (2013, WIPO; 2013, Malta Innovation Awards), research impact (2014, Stirling Management School), academic research (2014, IAREP/ICAP Student Paper Award), public contribution (2015, Rotary La Valette Paul Harris Award), writing (2019, Malta National Book Prize) and engaged research (2021, Malta STEM Awards). Earlier in my career, I won awards for essays (e.g. 1991, Sunday Times of Malta), broadcasting (1994, 1999, 2000 and 2001, Broadcasting Authority), environmental communication (2003, WWF Malta) and European active citizenship (2005, European Commission Directorate-General for Education and Culture).
Impact. Beyond the awards, I am particularly interested in whether research travels beyond academia and reaches people who can use it. My academic work has been cited 1,500+ times in other scholarly works (i10-index 25). It has also been disseminated through 100+ news articles and editorials in leading Maltese news outlets and institutional news dissemination, 40+ local broadcasts, podcasts such as Podcast ta' Jon, interviews such as Women in Science, and international media, including EC News Alert and ARTE. I have been featured in exhibitions, including the 2023–2024 She Can exhibition, created for the World Capital for Women and Girls in Science, and the 2024 United Nations in Geneva international exhibition, Not a Woman’s Job? Breaking Barriers in Science, celebrating women leading innovation in science and technology. Impact is the nicest form of recognition.
